Mahatma Gandhi once said, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” Unfortunately, not everyone agrees on what that change should look like. However, if each person took a step to value and respect those in their own communities, the world could start to transform into a more accepting place.

What if individuals trapped in the venom of racism could be freed from its poisonous effects? What if we all started by making small changes in our everyday interactions, from our thoughts to our actions? Together, we could manifest a safer, more inclusive world.

10 Steps to Becoming the Change We Want to See:

  1. Look Inward:
Become more aware of your own preconceived thoughts and biases. Self-reflection is the first step toward growth and understanding.
  2. Minimize “Tolerance” of Others:
Tolerance sounds positive, but it implies putting up with people. Instead, seek respect and understanding, recognizing the inherent value in each person.
  3. Maximize Empathy:
Empathy is not about feeling sorry for someone; it’s about compassion and understanding their experience. It’s about standing beside them in their struggles.
  4. Understand Diversity:
Embrace the differences between people. Acknowledge that others may experience the world in ways that are unique to them, and that diversity enriches us all.
  5. Ask Yourself: “If this happened to someone I care about, would it still be okay?”
Consider how you would feel if the harm or injustice were directed at someone you love. This perspective helps foster understanding and compassion.
  6. Avoid Assumptions:
Resist generalizing or stereotyping people. Assumptions often lead to prejudice and racism, so take the time to understand the individual, not the stereotype.
  7. Take a Stand:
Speak up against prejudice, discrimination, or hurtful actions. Make it clear that you stand for equality, justice, and kindness.
  8. Challenge “Stinkin’ Thinkin’”:
Combat negative thoughts and behaviors that have been socially conditioned. Recognize that some ideas and prejudices are learned, and make an effort to unlearn them.
  9. Promote Equity for All People:
Advocate for fairness and justice for everyone. We are all equal in God’s eyes, and our society should reflect that truth.
  10. Choose to Be the Change:
Make a conscious decision to embody the change you want to see in the world. Remember: Nobody is a Nobody, and everybody is Somebody.

By following these steps, each of us can contribute to a more peaceful, just, and respectful world. The change we want to see begins with us.

Blessings to you,
Gloria
