The Great Commission: What Are Christians Expected To Do?

The “Great Commission” is one of the most important mandates Jesus gave to His followers. It defines the mission and responsibility of every Christian. Understanding and acting on this commission is essential for anyone who desires to faithfully follow Christ.
1. THE BIBLICAL FOUNDATION
Matthew 28:18–20 (ESV) “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
This command, spoken after His resurrection, summarizes the calling of the Church.
2. WHAT ARE CHRISTIANS EXPECTED TO DO?
A. Go Into All the World
Christians are expected to take initiative and go—whether physically, locally, globally, or digitally. This includes reaching people outside the church, engaging with others where they are.
Mark 16:15 (ESV) “And He said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.”
B. Make Disciples
The focus is not just on converts but on disciples—people who follow Jesus in every area of life. This involves forming relationships, teaching, and encouraging growth in faith.
C. Baptize Them
Baptism is a public sign of faith and entrance into the Christian community.
Christians are expected to guide others into making this bold, obedient step.
D. Teach Obedience to Jesus’ Commands
It’s not enough to just share the message; Christians are called to teach others to live out Jesus’ teachings. This includes helping people apply the Bible to everyday life.
E. Rely on Jesus’ Presence
Jesus ends the Great Commission with this assurance:
Matthew 28:20 (ESV) “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Christians are never alone in this mission—Jesus empowers and walks with them.
3. WHY THE GREAT COMMISSION MATTERS TODAY
A. Obedience: It is a direct command from Jesus.
B. Love for Others: Sharing the gospel is the ultimate expression of care.
C. Kingdom Growth: It’s how the Kingdom of God expands across the earth.
D. Eternal Impact: Lives are changed forever through the gospel.
4. KEY ACTIONS:
A. Preach Repentance.
Mark 1:15 (ESV) “and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.””
B. Defend Christian Values Against Cultural Decay.
Jude 1:3 (ESV) “Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”
C. Reject Globalist/Anti-Christian Agendas.
Examples: LGBTQ+ normalization (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer), DEI (Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Practices), and anti-white hatred.
CONCLUSION
The Great Commission is not optional for Christians—it’s the core of the Christian life. It challenges every believer to live with purpose: reaching the lost, disciplining others, and spreading the love of Christ. Whether across the street or across the world, every Christian is called to participate.
Failure to fulfill the Great Commission weakens the Church and surrenders nations to Satanic influence. True Christians must dominate, not assimilate.
